The defining characteristic of temporal media types (of which video is an example) is that they have a time dimension. This has several consequences, one of these being the obvious fact that they are inherently time-consuming to view. To watch a half-hour video clip, you have to spend half an hour. Of course, you need to spend time to view non-temporal media also, but then you have access to a crucial skill: skimming. [..]Temporal media are also significantly more difficult to edit and maintain than textual data, since the production method is more complex. After production is finished, it is hard to do changes other than cut-and-paste editing. It is difficult to produce new material that integrates seamlessly with the existing, and practically impossible to actually change the existing material.
